Shri V. S. Kalyanraman, a mathematician and an amateur astronomer by training, a bureaucrat by profession and a student of astrology by passion.
He had his traditional training in astrology from his teens, under a legendary Namboodiri scholar and took a vow not to turn a professional.
With distinction in Mathematics Honours from the University of Madras, commenced his career as a teacher in the Kerala Educational Department and entered the Civil Services, in the Ministry of Communications and held various senior positions before retiring as a senior officer heading the Training Centre of the department.
He also gained distinction in Tamil and did his Diploma in Management from IGNOU and a Diploma in Counselling, after his retirement.
After a stint of story writing in Tamil, in the early fifties, turned to serious study of Saivasiddhanta (Under late Sachidanandam Pillai) , Philosophy (Under Dr. Mahadevan.) Psychology (Under Prof. Chari.), Vedic Mathematics (Inspired by late Bharati Krishna Teertha), Bharatiya Ganita Sastra (With late R V Vaidya, Secretary, Calendar Reforms Committee and Late N C Lahiri, Prof.Koru and others), Jyothisha (astronomy) and Hindu Astrological systems (Under Raghava Josier, Sankarjois, P P Namboodiri and many others), including Vastu Sastra, Vedic Numerology and allied disciplines. His effort was only to understand the scientific principles enshrined in them. He has done immense studies into the ancient Indian contributions towards, mathematics, astronomy and allied disciplines (Purely non-professional activity.). As a college student he learnt panchanga computations from late C.G. Rajan. He was associated with the Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage, since its inception.
Amongst many inspirers and guides that he has worked with are late Prof. Koru (In editing Malayalam editions of Leelavati and Karanapadhathi.) and late K. K. Kurup (Editor of Jyothishamaasika.). As a student, he was fortunate to meet the late Shri Bharati Shree Krishna Tirtha, exponent of Vedic Mathematics; Bhagavan Ramana and for many times Kanchi Mahaswamigal.
He has contributed much as a freelancer in writing to magazines in English, Tamil and Malayalam, under the non-de-plume of ‘Bhaskaradaasan’, ‘Bhattotpala’, ‘Veeyeskay’, ‘Utpala’, ‘VSK’, ‘Bharadwaaja’, ‘Ajaathasatru’, ‘Yajnavalkya’ and many others. He handled the regular monthly features and Book Reviews for the Astrological Magazine of Bangalore for over three decades. Continuing the efforts, he also handled the monthly features for “Modern Astrology” and The Astrological eMagazine since their inception, apart from contributing various articles of academic interest. “Astro Musings” was a regular monthly column for THE EXPRESS STAR TELLER of the New Indian Express Group. Amongst the many of his successful predictions, his note on the Ayodhya verdict was foretold much before its proclamation.
Shri Kalyanraman has also authored many books. Amongst them are ‘Hindu Marriage Rituals and Their Significance’ , “Indian Astrology An Appraisal”, “Yogaarnava”, “Muhoortha Samgraha”, “Dasa System and Prediction”. Quite a few of his video lectures on “Analysis of Houses in Horoscopes”, “Muhoortha“, “Yogas in Indian Astrology” and “Prasna or Horary Astrology” and others have been well received by lovers of Astrology. His other books “1001 questions Answered About Indian Astrology” and “Compendium on Nakshatras” are yet to be published.
He has received many awards and titles like EST Nostradamus Award instituted by a leading Vedic Jyotish Magazine, Express Star Teller; “Ganitha Aacharya” from Astrological Council; “Jyothisharatnam” from Jyothisha Prachara Sabha of Trivandrum; “Jyothisha Aacharya” from the Astrological Research Institute of Cannanore; “Jyothisha Bhaskara” from the Kottayam Shasta Sammelan; and “Jyothisha Chakravarthi” from the All India Tantra Viswa Vigjnana Kendra of Thiruvananthapuram. The title “Jyothisha Mahasasgara” instituted by the ‘B V Raman Centenary Celebration Committee’ was conferred on him by Poojya Jayendrapuri Swami of Kailasa Ashrama. ICAS conferred on him the title “Jyothisha Kovid”.
He was involved in the project of compiling the Encyclopaedia of Indian Astrology by late Dr N E Muthuswamy and the English compilation of Raman’s Millennium Ephemeris. He has edited Malayalam translations of Vastu books of Sri Niranjan Babu. Closely associated with the Veda Adhayayana Kendra Bangalore, he has delivered many lectures. He has delivered several memorial lectures at the Indian Institute of World Culture Bangalore under the aegis of many institutions.
Preferring anonymity to publicity he always vowed to remain a student forever.
